What are Executive Functions?
Executive functioning skills are a set of high-level cognitive skills including planning and prioritizing, time management, organization, emotional regulation, flexible thinking, working memory, and more.
Together these skills allow us to direct our actions toward goals and ensure we are living fulfilling lives. Executive functioning skills are controlled mostly by the brain's prefrontal cortex - the area responsible for the highest levels of thinking and planning, but the last to finish developing.
How does coaching help?
Executive functioning coaching enables students to turn their dreams into reality by setting goals, turning goals into plans, and turning plans into action..
By working on self-awareness and metacognition students learn to understand their strengths, interests, and needs. Students work with their coach to develop systems to prioritize tasks, manage their time, and form routines to hold themselves accountable. Practicing self-advocacy ensures that students are getting their needs met to set themselves up for success.
Is this right for my child?
Each student's goals, strengths, and needs are different, and their path to success will be unique.
An executive functioning coach will use non-directive coaching techniques to help each student determine their own life path, find internal self-motivation, and ultimately live a life of authenticity knowing that they are taking action every day to move them closer to their goals.
